Acne is a disorder of the skin's sebaceous glands
that affects over 80% of the population aged 14 - 30. 25%
of those affected by acne in their teens will go on to
develop acne scars.
It has been shown that the major bacterial cause of acne,
Propionobacterium Acnes, can be destroyed by the
application of light. Our broadband light source, 585plus
IPL handpiece works on optimal surface bacteria
destruction as well as on deeper layers to effectively
target the bacteria in pustules, papules and blocked
pores. In addition, infrared wavelengths penetrate more
deeply into the skin, heating overactrive sebaceous
glands and reducing sebum output.
It is thought that this reversible thermal damage to
sebaceous glands can result in long term remission from
acne. Acne are a common problem and often require combination treatment due to presence of acne causing bacteria that need to be treated in the entire area (such as the face or back) or the problem will reoccur. It is important to follow medical advice and have realistic expectations about the lenght of time that may be involved in achieving a complete clearance, as well as to have understanding of certain rarer underlying causes such as hormonal problems, which will necessitate ongoing maintenance treatments in some cases.
For vast majority of patients with acne problems, a course of IPL acne treatment protocol is reccomended, usually in combination with a course of chemical peels and Cosmeceuticals, treats active acne, mild acne scarring and discolouration. This combination treatment approach works to achieve full resolution of underlying causes of acne such as clearance of acne-causing bacteria, regulating sebum production and oil flow, improving skin healing and minimising and unclogging the skin pores, to ultimately achieve optimal skin condition and appearance.

COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q. HOW IS
THIS TREATMENT CARRIED OUT?
A. A layer of chilled gel is applied to
the skin to help guide the light. The light guide is
applied to the skin and a short pulse of light is
released. The applicator is passed to the neighbouring
area and the process is repeated until the whole area is
treated. If the reddness of the skin is minimal, this may
be repeated as this will improve treatment results. Also,
a mild chemical peel or a course of prescription
cosmeceuticals is usually required prior to treatment, in
order to achieve optimal results.
Each pulse of light treats a large area so the duration
of the treatment is quite short. The gel is removed and
area moisturised.
During treatment, protective eyewear will be
provided.
Q. AM I SUITABLE FOR
TREATMENT?
A. Almost anyone can recieve this treatmnet, except from
very dark skined or tanned individuals, pregnant women or
patients taking Roaccutane medication.
Q. HOW DOES THE TREATMENT
FEEL?
A. Treatment is mildly uncomfortable and there is no need
for anaesthesia as the procedure is usually very quick.
Sensation varies but is often described as a "flick of an
elastic band".
Q. ARE THERE ANY SIDE
EFFECTS?
A. The treated area can become quite red immediately
after the treatment, but this usually disappears within a
couple of hours. Most people experience no other side
effects, but a very small blister could form or the skin
may become temporarily lighter or darker.
Q. HOW LONG DOES TREATMENT
TAKE?
A. A typical treatment session on the whole face lasts
approximately 30 minutes.
Q. HOW MANY TREATMENTS ARE
NECESSARY?
A. The number of treatments necessery varies from person
to person, but typically 6 IPL treatments and 6
exfoliative treatments (such as chemical peels or
prescription cosmeceuticals regime) will result in a
significant improvement. IPL tretments should take place
fortnightly, with other treatments in between IPL
sessions.
Q. WHAT CAN I EXPECT IN A
CONSULTATION?
A. Prior to the treatment, a consultation is conducted in
which a medical history and examination are performed to
confirm suitability for treatment. You will also have the
opportunity for any questions you may have to be answered
by your treating doctor.
Before the treatment commences you will be asked to
provide written consent for the procedure and a small
test patch will be carried out in order to tailor the
treatment to your individual needs.
