Laser and IPL hair removal relies on the absorption of the light by the melanin, pigment contained in the hair shaft, in preference to the melanin in the skin. The light energy heats the pigment and effectively destroys the hair follicle without damaging surrounding cells.
COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q. HOW IS THIS TREATMENT PERFORMED?
A. The laser or Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is placed on the skin and a short pulse of light is released, which targets many follicles at the same time. The applicator is then moved to the neighbouring area of the skin and the process is repeated until the entire area is treated.
For IPL treatment a thin layer of chilled gel is applied to help guide the light, but this is not required for a laser procedure.
Q. AM I SUITABLE FOR TREATMENT?
A. Most people are suitable for treatment. Best results are often achieved with clients who have fair skin and dark hair. Dark hair is more easily treated as it has a high concentration of melanin. Grey/white hair contains no melanin so it is not suitable for treatment.
Q. HOW DOES THE TREATMENT FEEL?
A. Treatment sensation varies but it is often described as "a flick of an elastic band". Typically, no anaesthesia is required and most patients describe the discomfort as moderate and tolerable. However, we can provide you with a local anaesthetic cream following a consultation with one of our doctors.
Q. WHAT WILL I SEE AFTER THE TREATMENT?
A. The hair follicles are damaged by heat but the hairs remain in the follicles. The dead hairs shed after 1-3 weeks as the epidermis renews. During this period the hairs will seem to "grow" as they are pushed out by the new epidermis, until they fall out leaving smooth, hairless skin.
Q. ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS?
A. The skin may be red immediately after the treatment and the hair follicles may be swollen or bumpy but this usually subsides within a few hours. Adverse reactions are rare but may include a small blister or temporary lightening or darkening of the skin.
Q. HOW MANY TREATMENTS ARE NECESSARY?
A. Only hair that is actively growing is affected, therefore multiple treatments are needed. Treatment is conducted every 4-8 weeks, depending on the area treated, until the desired result is achieved. The required number of treatments varies, but typically 6 or more teratments are needed for optimum results.
Q. HOW LONG DOES EACH TREATMENT TAKE?
A. Treatments can take as little as 10 minutes to an hour, depending on the size of the area treated.
Q. WHAT CAN I EXPECT IN THE CONSULTATION?
A. Prior to the treatment, a consultation is conducted in which a medical history and examination are performed to confirm suitability for treatment. You will also have the opportunity for any questions you may have, to be answered by your treating doctor.
Before the treatment commences you will be asked to provide a written consent for the procedure and a small test patch will be carried out in order to tailor the treatment to your individual needs.
