MUSCLE RELAXANT INJECTIONS

The non surgical management of facial lines and wrinkles has become a revolutionary treatment in medical aesthetics, helping millions of people achieve beautiful and radiant skin. The muscle relaxant effects of the medication, when used safely, remove the tell tale signs of ageing and allow the skin to return to its youthful appearance.

Since the development of Botox®, these treatments have been performed by doctors worldwide to treat a variety of cosmetic conditions particularly movement related wrinkles in the upper third of the face. Areas most commonly treated include frown and forehead lines and crow’s feet around the eyes. You will have the opportunity to discuss all treatment options in great detail with your treating doctor to perfectly tailor the treatment to your needs.
In our clinic you will always be asessed and treated according to your individual requirements, and only by experienced resident doctors, so you can rest assured you are in Safe Hands

The muscle relaxant typically used for this purpose is a derivative of botulinum toxin and when injected properly and in extremely small doses into the problem area it affects the underlying muscle by allowing it to relax completely. This smoothens out the existing wrinkles and prevents the formation of new ones.
Since it has a reversible effect, it is recommended that in the first year 3-4 treatments are applied to each area to maintan optimal appearance of the skin. After that, top-ups of 1-2 treatments per year are normally required as the muscles treated become less strong.
Any remaining lines that are etched into the skin can be treated with variety of other treatments including dermal filler products

This treatment is also used very effectively to decrease excessive underarm sweating and you can read more about that in our section on axillary hyperhidrosis.

COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q. IS THIS TREATMENT SAFE?
A. This treatment has been used in medicine for over 20 years and it has proven to be exceptionally safe in cosmetic treatments, but only if performed by a trained and registered medical professional. In our clinic you will be treated only by a fully qualified doctor specifically trained and experienced in these procedures which further minimizes the possibility of any side effects. You can read more about the importance of safety in our section on Safe Hands.

Q. WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS?
A. Very rarely the muscle relaxant may migrate to nearby muscles causing slight drooping of the eyelid, but these instances are very rare, reversible and entirely uncommon at the hands of an expert medical practitioner. Otherwise, on a rare occasion there may be slight transient bruising, redness or swelling at the injection site, which can be managed by applying a cool compress or make-up. Although unlikely, you may experience a mild headache following this treatment

Q. ARE THESE INJECTIONS PAINFUL?
A. When injected properly, this procedure is not painful, with most people experiencing only a slight transient discomfort.

Q. HOW SOON WILL THE TREATMENT WORK AND HOW LONG WILL IT LAST?
A. You will start to see some improvement after a few days but the full effect will be apparent within 2 weeks. To maintain the optimal result you may need repeat treatments every 3-4 months for the first year, and even less frequently thereafter.

Q. WHAT I CAN AND CAN NOT DO AFTER THE TREATMENT?
A. For the first 4 hours after the treatment you will be advised not to exercise vigorously, drink excessive alcohol or lie flat. Otherwise you can carry on your activities as normal.

Q. WILL MY FACE BECOME NUMB OR BECOME EXPRESSIONLESS?
A. No. Our doctors carefully determine injection sites to avoid effect on muscles of facial expression and not alter the sensation in the face.

Q. IS THIS TREATMENT SUITABLE FOR ME?
A. This treatment will not be suitable for you in the following situations:

- if you are pregnant or breastfeeding
- if you have been diagnosed with a neuromuscular condition such as Myasthenia Gravis
- if you are taking certain types of medications including antibiotics erythromycin and azithromycin

If you are taking regular aspirin or ibuprofen you can still have this treatment but be aware that the side effect of mild bruising may be more likely.
Also, we advise you not to drink excessive amounts of alcohol in the week prior to the treatment.
