IN THE MEDIA - 5 Myths About Botox and Fillers

Due to increasing concerns with unregulated medical aesthetic procedures, which essentially means that anyone can purchase various cheap low-quality materials and equipment from the internet and treat any client at any premises, with little or no training and safety concerns, Dr Maja Bowen has written a following editorial in "Haverhill Weekly News" in order to answer a few common questions and address some of the concerns about this trend.

FIVE MYTHS ABOUT BOTOX AND FILLERS

by Dr Maja Bowen MBBS BACD

MYTH #1 - Having Botox® or fillers is like having a facial
Botox® and dermal fillers, unlike facials, are medical procedures used to effectively treat facial lines and wrinkles.
As with any medical treatment, they should always be performed by experienced doctors or trained nurses under direct medical supervision, in order to give the best results.

MYTH #2 - Botox and filler parties are safe and cost-effective
In fact Botox® and fillers are treatments that need to be tailored individually to each patient, which involves careful assessment to determine individual medical history, unique facial anatomy and aesthetic requirements.
Also, the medicines need to be stored and prepared appropriately.
None of this is possible during a "botox party" which is why you will never see expert practitioners organise an event like that.

MYTH #3 - All Botox® and fillers are the same

There are several different preparations of the botulinum toxin, only one of which is actual Botox®, and they all require different amount of diluting substance.
The problems with "cheap botox" is most commonly poor or no effect due to inadequate concentrations, and side-effects of cheap fillers range from allergic reactions to gritty appearance.
Only reputable medical clinics can be relied on to always use the non-allergenic, smooth, new generation dermal fillers and to know how to properly prepare Botox® to achieve desired results.

MYTH #4 - As long as someone has a certificate it means they are competent at administering Botox or fillers
While an experienced doctor, who has been administering injections and performing minor surgery for years, can quickly learn a new skill, this is not true for non-medically qualified practitioners.
Furthermore, non-doctors performing these procedures have very limited medical knowledge, which can lead to unsatisfactory cosmetic results or complications, which they are not qualified or able to treat.

MYTH #5 - It is a good idea to shop around for the cheapest Botox or fillers treatments
All reputable medical clinics are consistent with their prices and you will find very little if any variation amongst them.
The most cost-effective option is to choose a reputable clinic that offers treatment by experienced medical staff only, in order to give yourself the benefit of optimal results and the confidence of knowing you are in safe hands.
