Intense pusled light (IPL) systems release short pulses of filtered light that is readily absorbed by the high concentration of melanin found within freckles, sun spots or liver spots. The rapid absorption of light energy heats the melanin and causes the destruction of the melanin-rich cells. This results in disappearance of pigmented spots.
We treat the following common pigmented lesions:
- Lumina 585plus IPL treats benign, pigmented epidermal lesions (such as freckles, age and sun spots and seborrheic keratoses)
- 532nm Q-Switched Laser tretas more extenstive cases of epidermal pigmented lesions such as freckles, solar lentigines, seborrhoeic keratoses as well as cafe-au-lait spots.
- 1064nm Q-Switched Laser treats dermal pigmented lesions such as Naevus of Ota and Beckers Naevus.
COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q. HOW IS THIS TREATMENT PERFORMED?
A. With IPL treatment a layer of chilled gel is applied to the treatment area. The light applicator is placed on the skin and a short pulse of light is released. The applicator is then moved to the adjacent area and the process is repeated until the whole area is treated. The chilled gel is removed and the area cooled.
No gel is required for the Q-switched Laser treatments, however, due to the power of Laser energy delivered into the skin, a small amount of pin-point bleeding may occur during the treatment, to which a dressing may be applied after the treatment to protect the skin while it heals.
During treatment, protective eyewear will be provided.
Q. AM I SUITABLE FOR THIS TREATMENT?
A.Most people are suitable for treatment, except for very dark skinned or tanned individuals. However, dark, mottled or raised pigmentation and moles are not suitable for treatment.
The pigmented marks that respond best are superficial lesions such as those caused by sun damage (sun spots and freckles).
Q. HOW DOES THE TREATMENT FEEL?
A. Typically, no anaesthesia is required and most clents describe the discomfort as moderate and tolerable. However, we can provide you with a local anaesthetic cream following a consultation with one of our doctors.
Q. WHAT CAN I EXPECT AFTER THE TREATMENT?
A. The treated area may feel warm and sensitive for the first few days following the treatment. With IPL treatments the lesions will darken and may appear more obvious before they fade and "flake" away.
With Laser treatment an initial whitening of the area is seen which quickly fades and the pigment gradually fades over the following few weeks.
Q. ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS?
A. The skin that surrounds the pigmented lesion may become red immediately after. Most people experience no other side effects and the redness usually disappears within hours to a few days. Very rarely a small blister may form or the skin may become temporarily lighter or darker.
Q. HOW MANY TREATMENTS ARE NECESSARY?
A. The number of treatments will depend on the type and size of lesion present, but typically 1 to 3 sessions are needed at 4 to 6 week intervals, for optimum results.
Q. HOW LONG DOES EACH TREATMENT TAKE?
A. The number of treatments will depend on the type and size of lesion present, but a typical session will take between 10 and 30 minutes.
Q. WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM THE CONSULTATION?
A. Prior to the treatment, a consultation is conducted in which a medical history and examination are performed to confirm suitability for treatment. You will also have the opportunity for any questions you may have to be answered by your treating doctor.
Before the treatment commences you will be asked to provide written consent for the procedure and a small test patch will be carried out in order to tailor the treatment to your individual needs.
