VASCULAR LESIONS

Various forms of vascular lesions, such as talengiectasia (thread veins) are amongst the most common cosmetic concerns. Light based treatments of vascular lesions, such as Laser and IPL, requires the delivery of sufficient energy in order to thermocoagulate the blood vessel with minimal damage to the surrounding skin. Following the treatment, damaged vessels are absorbed by the body and little or no trace of the lesion remains.
We treat the following types of vascular lesions:
- Lumina 585plus IPL treats rosacea, thread veins, spider naevi, facial telangiectasia and Port Wine Stains.
- long-pulse ND:YAG Laser typically treats deep and leg telangiectasia, deep purple and blue facial or leg vessels (eg. thread veins around the nose or veins up to 3mm in diameter)), venous lakes, spider naevi and Campbell de Morgan spots.
COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q. HOW IS THIS TREATMENT CARRIED OUT?
A. The laser or Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is placed on the skin and a short pulse of light is released, which targets the blood vessels in the treatment area. The applicator is then moved to the adjacent area of the skin and the process is repeated until the entire area is treated.
For IPL treatment a thin layer of chilled gel is applied to help guide the light, but this is not required for a Laser procedure.
During treatment, protective eyewear will be provided.
Q. AM I SUITABLE FOR TREATMENT?
A. This treatment is suitable for most people, however, the best results are obtained for those with fair skin.
The fastest response is seen with facial thread veins, spider naevi and rosacea.
Q. HOW DOES THE TREATMENT FEEL?
A. Treatment is mildly uncomfortable and there is no need for anaesthesia as the procedure is usually very quick. Sensation varies but is often described as "very quick hot pin prick".
Q. ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS?
A. After treatment the area may feel warm for a few hours. Rarely some delicate skin areas such as the cheeks or decollete can be red and slightly swollen for up to 48 hours. Though very rare, there is a chance a small blister may form and there could be temporary lightening or darkening of the skin.
Q. HOW LONG DOES THE TREATMENT TAKE?
A. Treatments typically take from 15 to 45 minutes, depending on the size and type of the lesion.
Q. HOW MANY TREATMENTS ARE NECESSARY?
A. Typically 3 to 5 treatments are required for maximum results, though small lesions may clear in just a single session.
If required, repeat treatments are spaced at 4-6 week intervals.
Q. WHAT CAN I EXPECT IN A CONSULTATION?
A. Prior to treatment, a consultation is conducted in which a medical history and examination are performed to confirm suitability for treatment. You will also have the opportunity for any questions you may have to be answered by your treating doctor.
Before the treatment commences you will be asked to provide written consent for the procedure and patch testing of a small area will be carried out in order to tailor the treatment to your individual needs.
